The Black Knight is a creature in Dungeon Keeper 2 and Dungeon Keeper Online.

Dungeon Keeper 2[]

The Black Knight is more or less a re-skinned Knight, with only minor differences in their statistics.[clarification needed] However, there are major differences between their moral values: the Black Knight has forsaken honour, justice, piety, decency, and chivalry, and is quite sanguine, which shows in the bloodiness of his sword, as well as his eagerness to join the front line in battle. As the moral antithesis of the Knight, he does not dislike any of your normal creatures, who share his values.

His strong armour makes him very tanky in combat, and his mêlée attack (his only attack) hits hard. He will only flee if the battle goes very badly, or he suffers severe injuries. Once they are trained to experience level 4, they will automatically go to guard duty.

Elite and Counterpart[]

Variant comparisons.

Normal Black Knight, Elite Kaleb, Mercenary Knight, normal Knight.

The Elite Black Knight, Kaleb, is distinguished from normal Black Knights by a purple armor set. Kaleb's benefits:

  • +50% higher melee damage.
  • Trains slightly faster.
  • Slightly faster walk speed.
  • Almost 40% higher pay.
  • +50% higher mana cost per second to Possess.

The Black Knight's counterpart is the Knight, which also has a Mercenary variant. The Lord of the Land and the Stone Knight could be viewed as variants of both Knight and Black Knight.

Tips[]

  • Attracted by a Combat Pit from a Portal. From as small as 3x3 equating to 1. The center pit capacity determines their arrival number 1:1.
  • They default to training in the Training Room first, then guard duty in the Guard Room. Make sure they don't occupy the same Guard Room as converted hero units not to make any of them unhappy, or worse...
  • A perfect melee-only well-rounded but sturdy and quite strong frontline blocker.

Bugs[]

  • One of the creatures that may have his weapon leave behind a short purple trail in some occasions in the Training Room. This feature is not properly implemented as any deliberate thing, and is never explained.

Trivia[]

  • The emergence of Black Knights either as a distinct group or a group not aligned with the forces of good, is a fairly recent development in the world of Dungeon Keeper, because by the time you reach level 15 Fluttershine, upon selecting the Crusade variant of the mission, an alternate play-out of a so-called "Dark Uprising" has already been unleashed and the level showcases some later waves of it being extinguished of rebellious flame by harsh imprisonment. Said event was when the Black Knights turned against the Kingdom of Harmonia, under the nose of Lord Volstagg (possibly under the influence of mind-altering Fairies), possibly inspired by Keeper Carrion, who was previously present, survived the ordeal, but was driven out by Volstagg and the King's Three Sons, and you later meet Carrion on level 17 - Angelic - Moonshrine.
  • Black Knights in Dungeon Keeper 2 were originally seemingly darker in their initial appearance, as seen in an early 1998 promotional trailer:
    • At one point, it seems the developer team did attempt to simply paint the Knight armor black, possibly as a placeholder measure. This was obviously not selected as the way to proceed. So they seemingly went through an evolution first being merely Knights with black paint, then getting their unique armor pattern texture, then finally losing the plume and becoming slightly brighter gray.
      • The knight seen here fights alongside the heroes, and his sword is clean. These would suggest that he is, in fact, a Knight, not a Black Knight. It is possible that the developers were experimenting with what the Black Knight could look like, and were altering the appearance of the Knight accordingly, before the Black Knight went into the game as a discrete creature. The fact that his sword is clean could just mean that they had not come up with the Black Knight's sword being bloody at this point.
    • At one point, they had a yellow plume, like the Knight in the final game. But are clearly Black Knights because of the lack of elbow armor (Could make a fine addition one day as some additional variant next to the base and Elite appearances, albeit perhaps changing the plume from yellow to possibly blue to tastefully differentiate them from Knights, both normal and Mercenary...), as well as their bloody sword.
  • The Black Knight uses the same model as the Lord of the Land, Knight and the Stone Knights.
    • For whatever oddly esoteric reason, Kaleb the Elite Black Knight is purple.
    • With the painted Knight, the plumed Black Knight, the retail creature, and Kaleb, the Black Knight is a creature to have 4 skin appearances from pre-release to end of development, and all of them are theoretically on the same model except the plume. Other similarly thoroughly evolved creatures during development are the Knight, Firefly, Fairy, Mistress, and Salamander.
  • The Black Knight is a literary stock character, usually an antagonist, who doesn't want to portray any heraldry or personal identifier features on his armor, shield, or horse, usually to remain anonymous so he can perform evil deeds. Even a couple of historical figures existed, however most were not shrouded in anonymity, and some weren't even malevolent in their action of wearing such attire. The figure has countless times been utilized in fictional literature and film.

Progression

This creature was cut,[verification needed] although concept art exists. The similarity of the helmet to the Necromancer's suggests that the Black Knight may have been an early version of it.
