It has been suggested that this page be renamed to Attack preferences or Combat classes. Reason: Were these ever officially referred to as 'fighter types'? The talk page may have more information.
The various attack preferences (DK1), combat classes (DK2), or fight styles (DK2) determine each creature's preferred combat style.

Mêlée
Mêlée creatures prefer to fight at close range. They may have long-distance attacks, and will use them while closing the distance between themselves and the enemy, but will always attack Hand to Hand (or, in the case of the Dragon, with Flame Breath) when possible. Mêlée creatures always attack Dungeon Hearts with only their close-range attack; they will not use ranged attacks while closing in on it, like they do with enemy creatures.
Ranged creatures always try to attack from a distance, always trying to keep space between themselves and their opponents, assuming they are able to use ranged attacks. If they are unable to use ranged attacks, they will attack with close-range attacks, making them effectively mêlée units.
Blitzers tend to penetrate the front line in order to reach the enemy support creatures first. They go after other creatures once the support troops have been dealt with.[3]
Blockers are good for defence. They don’t tend to go on the offensive, but instead hold their ground to try to prevent penetration by the enemy.[3][verification needed]
Self-explanatory, though they will fight against other non-fighters, or as a last resort in defence of their master's Dungeon Heart.[verification needed]
