The Hellhound, or just Hound, is a creature type in Dungeon Keeper.
Description[]
"A double-headed dog who is great at guarding and pointing out heroes or enemy creatures. These dogs sniff out enemies behind walls and get as close to them as possible. They also cock their legs on dead bodies to aid decomposition." |
— Dungeon Keeper Manual |
The Hellhound is a fierce two-headed dog. The creature's high speed and damage output makes it a good counter to enemy spellcasters, such as Fairies and Wizards, as they can quickly get inside of melee range and stay there. This aside, the Hellhound's battle prowess is average, and their low health makes them ineffective when they are the first in the fray.
If the dungeon is breached (and note that lava is not a barrier to Hellhounds' pathing), Hellhounds which have not been given a task will attack the enemy. This tends to make the Hellhound's life expectancy on the map rather short. If things go well, these suicide runs reveal the enemy assets, trigger traps, and cause occasional havoc.
When the dungeon is sealed either by earth or locked doors, idle Hellhounds loyally follow and guard other creatures as they go about their tasks. Whenever a Hellhound walks past a corpse, they cock their legs and urinate on them. This aids decomposition of bodies in a Graveyard. Operating by their sense of smell, Hellhounds can apparently detect units through walls. They will stand in the nearest position to the enemy and bark against the wall.

- Immune to lava and Lava Traps.
- Can act like a bodyguard to many creatures.
- Excellent for scouting.
- Gains Flame Breath at level 5
- Speeds up decomposition in the Graveyard.
- Can see invisible enemies.
- Can perform research.
- Can sense enemies behind walls. They bark if they detect enemies on the other side of a wall.
- They harbor an animosity for Demon Spawns, and will fight them if they encounter them in a Lair.
- Unlike real-life dogs, Hellhounds are colorblind, if a player possesses a Hellhound, they see in black and white.
- 'Ghoul Hound', as found on the Dungeon Keeper Goodies Disc, is likely an early name for the Hellhound, even though Hellhounds aren't even remotely ghostly.
