For the game, see Dungeon Keeper.

The Keeper is the main protagonist, or villain, of the Dungeon Keeper series. They are an anonymous entity in which players will take control of in their quest to rule the underworld. He is only seen as an evil-looking hand (other Keepers are not seen at all) and possesses the ability to cast a myriad of spells. In the games, non-hero factions (that is, the player and any opponents that own and manage a dungeon) are referred to as Keepers. A Keeper is defeated once their Dungeon Heart is destroyed. The Keepers' dungeons are colour-coded with bright colours, to contrast the heroes' white.

In both Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2, it is possible for up to four players to fight in multiplayer, each representing a Keeper coloured red, blue, green or yellow.

Dungeon Keeper[]

Keeper faces

In Dungeon Keeper, a rival Keeper is first met in Lushmeadow-on-Down. They are represented in the Information Panel by a face of his/her colour. The player faces many Keepers during the campaign, sometimes allied against you. Typically, when facing one other Keeper they will be coloured blue; when facing two, the second will be green, and when facing three, the third is yellow. Despite this, you will never face three other Keepers in the main campaign outside the Full Moon Level (although three other Keepers do appear in the The Deeper Dungeons level Belbata). There are also exceptions; the The Deeper Dungeons level Kari-Mar has you facing off against a yellow Keeper instead of a blue one. When you're facing one or more enemy Keepers, they will from time to time taunt you with one of the following lines:[1]

When defeated, Keepers become Floating Spirits, which are not normally seen in game. If you have been defeated, this can be possessed by clicking the Possess Creature icon in the Research Panel.

There is evidence that a purple player was once planned: some tilesets have reinforced walls coloured purple instead of yellow. Dungeon Keeper FX, however, implements the purple player, as well as two others, coloured black and orange, for a total of up to eight players, including the hero player.

Dungeon Keeper 2[]

In Dungeon Keeper 2, there are more named Keepers and there is the possibility of fighting up to four others in the map Carnage, with the fourth rival using the colour purple. This is the only time in the entire game you fight against four other Keepers (and therefore the only time you see a purple Keeper), with this feature not being possible in Multiplayer.

Notable Keepers[]

  • Level 1: Warcry - Smilesville - The main anti-protagonist Keeper controlled by the player.
  • Level 2: Enchantments - Sing-Song - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 3: Greed - Ramshackle - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 4: Snipers - Shadygrove - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 5: Fear - Elmshadow - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 6: Besieged / Rout - Sweetwater - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 7: Caverns - Emberglow - Gormagon (blue), whose dungeon is destroyed by Giants after he tried to tame this fiery land belonging to Lord Sigmund before the player, supposedly resulting in his death.
  • Level 8: Aftermath - Snapdragon - Dante (blue), who had invaded Lord Titus's realm, Snapdragon, but has uniquely left his dungeon abandoned being chased away by a group of Wizards. Somehow his Dungeon Heart was right next to an indestructible Hero Gate.
  • Level 9: Ambush - Silverstream - No known keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 10: Smash - Woodsong - Asmodeus (blue) who defeated Lord Ronin - leader to many, but especially Sylvan Elves - moments before the player arrived and set up questionable defenses too weak for his own good endangering your Portal Gem acquisition. He looks impressive at first by design but due to him being the first Keeper you face he is a pushover once you manage to stick your toe through a breach in his wall. His orderly stature is a noob trap. Speed is your key against him.
  • Level 11: Carnage (A/B/C) - Sparklydell - Belial (blue), Kronos (blue or green, depending on level variation), Drako (green), Morgana (yellow, first mentioned in the briefing of Ambush, quite passive and weak even if primarily she wanted to lay claim to the land) and Raksha (purple, commanding her followers on the largest territory, the only instance in the entire game when there are 5 Keepers on one level simultaneously and the only time any of them use the color purple).[Note 1]
  • Level 12: Scavenge - Goldenglade - Malachai (blue, first mentioned in the briefing for Aftermath) who, after besieging him, has previously defeated Lord Bramble before the arrival of the player and now unknowingly forces the player to make use of the remaining scraps of the land. He is said to be inspiring, so much so that he tends to enjoy the allegiance of local evil creatures against remaining heroes. But is still vulnerable to the undead.
  • Level 13: Conversion - Cherish - Malleus (blue, sometimes spelt as Maleus), the simple minded ally/owner of the insurmountable hordes of Vampires who doesn't expect the conversion of Monks, even if he has some himself. The Keeper and the Vampires use each other to gain some benefit from the owned Portal Gem.
  • Level 14: Reap - Peachtree - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 15: Crusade / Storm - Fluttershine - No known Keeper in this region upon arrival. Carrion was supposedly previously here but driven out by Lord Volstag and the three Princes and their mutual conflict may have been in the forefront of what inspired the Dark Uprising of the Black Knights.
  • Level 16: Creep - Stonekeep - No known Keeper in this region ever. (The region flashes when the player gets access to Conversion, but the voice clip is usually missing from most versions of the game due to a bug. The same thing happens before Angelic.)
  • Level 17: Angelic - Moonshrine - Harkan (blue, actually the main threat here) and Carrion (green) who are allied and want to lay their claim to The Enigmatic Dark Angels and may eventually do so unless the player intervenes. (They also happen to be allies of Nemesis.) Carrion, first mentioned in the briefings of Reap, supposedly had something to do with inspiring the Dark Uprising in Fluttershine while following a lead about the Dark Angels, and was such a threat that King Reginald commanded his sons, the Princes, to personally destroy him (presumably at Fluttershine earlier, possibly inspiring the Dark Uprising) when the King learnt of Nemesis' own search for the Dark Angels. The Princes managed to deter the surviving Carrion from the search, though apparently this was only temporary, as you still encounter Carrion here, and Nemesis on the next level (and if the game works properly, or you added repaired game files, Nemesis can also have Dark Angels).
  • Level 18: Brotherhood - Cherry Blossom - Nemesis (blue), first mentioned before Besieged / Rout and then before Carnage, an aged adversary Keeper already past his prime and the main rival mentioned throughout Dungeon Keeper 2, a simplistic humble-sized juggernaut of a threat who technically has everything. By the time you catch up to him here narratively he is already on the defensive backfoot as he just became furious that not only was he defeated by Lord Pureheart but also you, the player, recently managed to gain the favor of the Dark Angels. (Although as a game mechanic so does he.) He presents himself as nothing more than a glorified speed bump. Also present are Nemesis' "sons" Faust (yellow) and Fabius (green)[Note 2] who simply guard their father's flanks by their simple presence and automatically generate perimeter patrol explorations through their creature habits (mostly Fireflies and Rogues, sometimes the occasional reacting Dark Elf and Black Knight) which mostly function as extra guard activity.
  • Level 19: Interception - Butterscotch - No known Keeper in this region ever.
  • Level 20: Regicide - Heartland - No known Keeper in this region ever.
